Bang

I started at slow trot until we picked up into a good canter and before I knew it I was galloping with Safire over rolling hills. I felt like I was flying as the wind brushed my cheeks. I could see some hills up ahead so I slowed Safire down. I could tell she didn’t appreciate it. Safire loved to stay going once she got going. I decide to take a new area I hadn’t ridden before. It actually didn’t really have any trails or markings, but I wanted a challenge.

We jumped a half broken fence and started up a mountainside. I was thinking I’d just go to the top and see if there’s any kind of view, then down the other side. Then I’d head back from where I came. I thought to myself that if there is any time left I might take the trail down to the stream in the woods later.

Going up was quite tricky for Safire as there were a lot of old, broken tree rounds and large rocks. I certainly didn’t want her to break anything and decided if the terrain didn’t get better soon we might have to turn back. I really had to pull back on Safire. She wanted to go full throttle, badly. It was like she could sense something wasn’t right. We crested the mountaintop within forty minutes. I had to pull back on the reigns so much. I didn’t want Safire to hurt herself. I decided into go in direction that was more northerly. This way I might see if we couldn’t connect to some of the trails we were familiar with.

We were going down now. Safire seemed a bit more annoyed as I pulled the reins back again. I told her it was okay and rubbed her neck to see if I could calm her a bit. It was tedious but we made our way down the north side much quicker than I expected and I began to see why. The mountain levelled off and then went up for a bit longer and down again. I was pretty sure we were off of it now and would soon hit some familiar trails. The woods were thick here, but I could see up ahead that we would soon be hitting a clearing, and it would be much thinner.

We walked into the clearing where I began to look for trails or markings. Alec had shown me many different markings in these woods that connected to well-used trails. I was sure we would come to some soon. Just as I was, thinking that I noticed a trail and a marker. Yes, we could probably make it to the stream and then come back out before anyone would worry. We moved on towards the trail when I heard a growl from behind us. Safire made a loud distress sound. Suddenly it was in beside us. Safire flung around. Then I could see rushing out towards us was a coyote. Safire bucked at it and kept trotting around in a circle.
